Physical therapy or Physiotherapy (often abbreviated to PT) is a health care profession that remediates impairments and promotes mobility, function, and quality-of-life through:
Examination
Diagnosis
Physical Intervention
[therapy using mechanical force and movement]
It is carried out by physical therapists—known as physiotherapists in most countries.
A hands-on approach to re-gaining mobility and strength.
In addition to clinical practice, other activities encompassed in the physical therapy profession include: research, education, consultation, and administration. In many settings, physical therapy services may be provided alongside; or in conjunction with, other medical or rehabilitation services, including occupational therapy.
What can I expect at my first physiotherapy visit?
On your initial visit, your physiotherapist will assess your specific condition. A detailed history of your injury will be taken and a full musculoskeletal examination will be performed. A clinical diagnosis will then be established to identify and appropriately treat your condition. Based on your assessment, individual goals will be created with you, and a specific physiotherapeutic treatment plan will be initiated.
What does physiotherapy treatment entail?
Your rehabilitation will include one-on-one manual treatments by your therapist aimed at alleviating pain and increasing movement. Your therapist may also use various modalities to speed your recovery and decrease pain.
Any one or a combination of the following modalities used may include:
Manual therapy—hands-on stretching and mobilization of muscles bones and joints
Electrotherapy—pain-relieving currents
Ultrasound
Acupuncture
Dry Needling
Your therapist will also prescribe a specific exercise program to improve your strength, flexibility or function as needed. This program will be closely monitored and progressed by your therapist.
At Advanced Concepts Physiotherapy, each program is customized to suit your individual needs with the goal of getting you back to normal activity independently and as soon as possible.
