In today’s society we are continually bombarded with the benefits of exercise. We see billboards, television commercials, and advertisement campaigns promoting running, cycling, and a variety of sports.

Certain medical conditions or injuries can be aggravated by specific exercises or a certain type of sport.

Physiotherapy can help to advise you on specific exercises to maximise your health without aggravating pain. It can also assist in correcting inefficient running, throwing, or gym workout techniques.

At Advanced Concept Physiotherapy, our physiotherapists are highly trained professionals who can identify weaknesses or imbalances in the body. They can help to target specific areas in the body where weakness or pain is felt, and then prescribe a suitable treatment plan.

Physiotherapist prescribed exercises are designed to improve movement and function, with other benefits including:
• Increased bone strength
• Increased physical work capacity
• Increased joint range of motion or flexibility
• Improved sense of well‐being
• Increased muscular strength
• Improved glucose regulation
• Decreased blood pressure
• Increased lean muscle mass and decreased fat stores
• Improved sleep patterns
• Reduced pain
• Reduced stress levels and levels of anxiety

Specialised Physiotherapy Exercise
Physiotherapist prescribed exercises are generally employed to specifically target muscle deficiencies, and to also help rehabilitate after an injury, or after undergoing surgery.

Therapeutic or prescription exercises are often used to improve strength, function, and mobility, as well as to significantly lessen pain and swelling. Physiotherapists also specialise in specific individual stretching, strength training and condition regimes.

Evidence-Based Exercise
Exercise is truly vital for the treatment and management of a wide variety of chronic health conditions and injuries. General exercise has proven to be effective for people with osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, ankylosing spondylitis, sub-‐ acute and chronic back pain, various lung conditions, intermittent claudication and many chronic conditions. Specific muscle strengthening and endurance training has proven to be effective for certain muscle groups to help many musculoskeletal and sports injury complaints.
